Ethiopian Welo opal can show unexpected flashes of green, orange, blue and red as it moves in the light. That changing appearance is part of its appeal, but it also makes shopping from photographs different from shopping for a uniformly colored gem. A careful buyer considers the overall appearance, not just one bright photograph.
Understand play-of-color
Precious opal is valued for its shifting patches or pinpoints of color. Look at more than one angle, ideally in a short video under ordinary lighting. One stone may show broad patches while another displays tiny sparkling dots. Neither pattern is automatically better; choose the effect you enjoy. Body color matters too: a pale, translucent opal can feel airy, while a darker background can emphasize contrast.
Compare cuts and settings
Cabochons have smooth, rounded tops that often display opal color beautifully. Rose-cut stones have flat bases and shallow facets that change how reflections appear. In a pendant, consider the gemstone's dimensions and the setting's outline; in a ring, notice whether the edges are exposed to daily knocks. Check whether the metal is 925 sterling silver and whether any gold color is plating.
Make a confident online choice
Review the listed size in millimeters, examine several honest photographs, and read the care information. Opals can vary naturally, so small pattern differences are not necessarily defects. Ask whether the pictured piece is the exact stone you will receive or a representative example. If a pendant is sold without a chain, plan for that separately.
Choose the opal that appeals to you across several views, not simply the most dramatic single flash.
