Labradorite and moonstone are both members of the feldspar family, yet the light effects shoppers notice can look quite different. Understanding the difference helps you interpret product photographs and select a gemstone that suits your personal style.

Moonstone has a softer moving glow

Traditional moonstone often displays a soft, billowing sheen known as adularescence. That glow is commonly white or blue and may appear to move beneath the polished surface. It can be subtle in indirect light. The exact effect depends on the gem's internal structure, polish, cut and viewing angle.

Labradorite can show stronger color patches

Labradorite is associated with labradorescence, an optical effect that can produce vivid areas of blue, green, gold or other colors. Many stones also have a darker gray body color that creates contrast. A labradorite cabochon may look quiet when viewed straight on and suddenly light up when tilted. This is normal, not a sign that the color disappeared.

How to compare jewelry online

Ask for a neutral-light photograph and, when possible, a short tilt video. Look at the gemstone's body color, shape, size, setting and natural inclusions. Trade names such as rainbow moonstone can refer to certain feldspars closely related to labradorite, so a specific gem identification is more helpful than the name alone. For either stone, avoid impact and abrasive cleaning.

Choose moonstone for its mist-like glow or labradorite for bold shifting patches of color—both reward movement and close observation.
