A close-up photograph can make a tiny pendant look like a statement piece. Millimeter measurements tell a more reliable story. When choosing a gemstone pendant online, consider the stone's length and width separately from its metal setting and any chain.
Read dimensions in the correct order
A 3 × 5 mm oval gemstone is compact, while a 6 × 8 mm oval offers a larger visible surface. A 10 × 14 mm gemstone makes a more pronounced focal point. Length and width do not always translate to the pendant's total outside dimensions, because bezels, prongs, decorative borders and the top bail add space. Ask whether listed dimensions describe only the gemstone.
Shape changes apparent size
A long pear or marquise can look more elongated than a round stone with a similar surface area. A rounded cabochon rises above the setting, while a flat rose-cut stone may have a lower profile. The metal finish and surrounding decorative elements also affect how prominent the pendant appears.
Check chain details before checkout
Product photographs may include a chain simply to demonstrate how the pendant can be worn. Confirm whether the chain is actually included, plus the bail's opening size if you plan to use a chain you already own. Review the stone measurements and any model photographs together for a realistic sense of scale.
When in doubt, sketch the listed dimensions on paper or compare them with a ruler before ordering.
